Reading and Reasoning

Hello everyone!

Today i will be reflecting on what i have learnt through doing Reading and Reasoning exercises.

Currently, i have done 3 exercises, and i am very sure i benefited a lot from this. I have learnt to analyse the context of a book better, developed a better interest in reading, and last but not least, have the ability to find the reason why the author phrased things in one way or another. This ability i have learnt, is the most important thing i have learnt.

This ability is essential in my life, and i am sure that it is the main reason why we were told and instructed to do these worksheets, and the "reasoning" from the title, "Reading and Reasoning", speaks it all.

This is a very important ability as it will be pointless, reading books, and not realizing and understanding what is the purpose and message that the writer wants to convey to the readers. In fact, if you don't get the message that the writer is trying to convey, reading a book becomes pointless, and we will not benefit intellectually from it at all.

The reading and reasoning worksheets allowed me to thing hard on the context and puns in the literature book i have just read, which is the all time favourite, "To Kill a Mockingbird", and in short, as my class calls it, "TKAM", which stands for the initials of that lengthy yet meaningful and impactful title. From the title itself, one can already generate some questions, and in this context, the most important question would be "Why is this title given?" This is the ability i have just learnt, which is to question purpose, and find the reason of the author for putting it into the story.

To answer that question, i will be stating my points. A Mockingbird does nothing, but sits there, and sing for people. That is why it is a sin to kill a mockingbird. Corresponding to the context of the story, the blacks, do not do anything, but just live their life and aid the whites in doing things. However, in Maycomb, people are constantly trying to sue them for things they did not do, and accusing and torturing them psychologically, by constantly hurling profanities and insults at them. Therefore, this title was given.

That is about all!

Thank you!

Yours sincerely,
Mervin Lim
