Favourite Character in To Kill A Mockingbird

Hello everyone!

Today i am going to talk about my favourite character in To Kill A Mockingbird, my literature book for this year.

My favourite character is Atticus, Scout and Jem's father.  I have several reasons for that, and i will be elaborating on them later on.

Firstly, he is really a very, very talented person, with fantastic skills that not many people in this world have, making him extremely unique. He is talented as a lawyer, being able to collate and consolidate all the information and evidence for the law case. A prominent evidence in the book for my point would be that he has been the first lawyer that was able to protect and defend a coloured folk for so long, in a court case. Also, on contrary, despite the educational and work-based talents, he also has many other talents. A good example would be his shooting skills. He was Maycomb's deadliest shooter, and whenever trouble arrives, for example a mad dog, he would be called to shoot the dangers dead.

Next, he is really wise, and is always right on his judgement. For example, when Mrs Dubose, the old lady, kept insulting him for protecting a coloured folk, calling him crude names such as "nigger lover", he did not mind, and instead, told his children not to get angry and agitated by those crude remarks. He even help defend Mrs Dubose, explaining that she is an old woman, and that the children's job is to not get angry by her remarks. In the end, before Mrs Dubose died, she even left a gift for Scout and Jem, proving that she really did not mean what she says, and is really grateful for the reading sessions Jem provided her with.

Last but not least, his tolerance level is another factor why I admire him, and respect him so much. He tolerate any insult anyone hurls at him. For example, when Bob Ewell spat on his fact and insulted him with profanities, he merely wiped his face, and waited for Bob Ewell to stop. Even though he may be intolerant at times when Scout gets into a fight, or when Jem and Scout are disrespectful to their seniors and relatives, it is also for his children's own good as well. He wanted to instill basic discipline in his children, so that they will be well behaved, and not cause trouble. This is also the stepping stones for having a good future. Without basic discipline, one can never excel in anything!

In conclusion, i admire him because he is a really wise man, and a true gentleman. Everyone loves and appreciates his presence and contribution to Maycomb.

Thank you!

Yours sincerely,
Mervin (:
